Artist Bio
Blake Nellis is an accomplished multidisciplinary artist whose work spans fine art photography, dance, choreography, and education. His artistic practice explores the profound intersections of human connection, physical expression, and the natural world. With a Bachelor of Arts in Theater/Dance and a minor in Music from Luther College (2007), Nellis has established himself as a versatile creator and educator in the performing and visual arts.
Following his undergraduate studies, Nellis expanded his artistic horizons internationally, living and working in Brussels, Belgium, where he deepened his practice in Contact Improvisation and taught at the International School of Brussels. His time abroad significantly influenced his artistic perspective and continues to inform his work today. Since 2010, Nellis has been based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he has become an integral part of the city's vibrant arts community.
Nellis's artistic excellence has been recognized through numerous prestigious grants and awards, including the 2021 Minnesota State Arts Board Individual Support Grant and multiple Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grants in both Photography (2019) and Dance (2015). His most notable achievement includes the publication of "Skin.Rock.Bone," a 200-page fine art book funded by the 2019 Artist Initiative Grant. This comprehensive work, photographed between 2014 and 2019 across the United States, examines the intimate relationship between the human form and natural landscapes.
Additional support for his work has come from distinguished organizations including the Jerome Foundation, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. His photography has been featured in publications and exhibitions, including SHOTS magazine, and venues such as The Soap Factory, Homewood Studios, and Squirrel Haus Arts Gallery. His performing arts career encompasses productions at prestigious venues including the Walker Art Center, The Cowles Center for Dance & Performing Arts, The Southern Theater, Tek Box, and many others.
As an educator, Nellis brings a teaching philosophy grounded in humor, authenticity, empathy, and inclusivity. He currently serves on the faculty of Young Dance and Saint Paul Ballet, while also working as an independent contractor within the Minneapolis Public School system. His pedagogical approach emphasizes the integration of multiple artistic disciplines, particularly the synthesis of dance, natural elements, photography, and spontaneous creativity.
Currently, Nellis is accepting commissioned work and booking photography services for weddings, creative portraiture and family portraits.
